Drawing
Sketch in the City
You walk past a hundred drawable things a day and photograph none of them well. Urban sketching is the opposite of a perfect photo: you sit somewhere ordinary, a cafe, a bus stop, a parking lot, and draw what is actually in front of you, wonky perspective and all. Each week the group picks a kind of place to find wherever you live, so a sketch from your corner sits next to one from a street across the world. You post a photo of your page, smudges and crossed-out lines included, and we cheer the brave marks and trade tips on the hard ones. No talent required, just a pen and twenty minutes of sitting still.
What you'll do
- Sketch one real place from life each week, wherever you are.
- Photograph your page and share it, smudges and all.
- Swap encouragement and small tips with five other sketchers.
Schedule
A new kind of place to find drops each week; you sketch and post on your own time. Six locations over six weeks.
Vibe
Brave and forgiving. Wobbly lines are the whole charm here.
Good to know
I cannot draw. Is that ok?
That is most of us. Urban sketching is about looking, not talent. The wobbly results are the point, and you will watch your eye sharpen week by week.
What supplies do I need?
Anything that makes a mark. A cheap notebook and a pen is the classic setup; bring watercolor or pencil if you have it, but nothing fancy is required.
Do I have to draw outside?
On location is the spirit, but a window seat, a cafe, or a busy room all count. The only rule is drawing from life, not from a photo.
